While everyone wonders just what big name striker signing Arsene Wenger will make, the Mirror linked him with a move for AZ Alkmaar’s Vincent Janssen instead.

Of course, just because Arsenal are said to be interested in the player does not mean that they will sign him nor that he is the only forward they are looking at.

Perhaps Wenger is considering him as a replacement for Yaya Sanogo, who struggled during two loan spells this season. Or maybe as an alternative to Joel Campbell, a player we all know the boss doesn’t rate that highly despite impressing when given the chance.

So who is Janssen?

Well, he’s a left-footed striker who stands just under 5’ 11″ tall and is more than comfortable with his right foot too, giving him superb balance and ability to manipulate the ball.

Prone to Adebayor-syndrome, one of the biggest weaknesses of his game is his tendency to be offside, but this is more than evened out by his finishing ability and off-the-ball movement.

Last season, he found the net 27 times in 34 league games, an impressive return by anyone’s standards. He also picked up five assists.

With five more goals coming in other competitions, along with two more assists, he finished the season with a very respectable 32 goals and seven assists in 49 games.

His current market value is around £4.5m but with three years left on his current deal with the Dutch side, a bid closer to £10m would likely be needed to secure his services.

Speaking recently, Ronald Koeman, Southampton’s manager, said of Janssen  “”He played (v England) against strong defenders from the Premier League. What pleased me most was the fact that he immediately grabbed the ball when the Dutch team got a penalty. You should still do, but at that moment and that action showed he has the necessary self-confidence.

“If you are scoring 27 in the Eredivisie, that’s very good. Only you do not know what these goals are worth at the highest level. That’s something we have to wait and see.

“Now Van Persie and Huntelaar are not there, it seems to me that Janssen will get the chance to see over time whether he would indeed be the striker for the Dutch national team.”

Here’s his scouting report so you can look like you know what you’re talking about when you’re out with your mates.
