With a disappointing season almost over and money to spend, Arsenal could be on the verge of a big summer and the latest rumours are something to get excited about.

Until you actually think about them and realise they aren’t happening.

The Gunners have been linked with Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski over the weekend, despite the striker having three years left on his contract with the German giants.

Incoming Bayern head coach Carlo Ancelotti has always had superb strikers in his sides: Andriy Shevchenko, Didier Drogba, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Karim Benzema have all played for the Italian, and he will surely be planning to build with Lewandowski in his Bayern team.

The Pole has suggested he could play in England one day but Bayern are not going to be willing to do business this summer and, frankly, there isn’t really any reason for him to want to leave.

In fact, reports just a few weeks ago from both Sport Bild and Sport1 said the striker is considering extending his Bayern Munich contract a further two years to 2021 and is in talks with the club.

A teammate of Lewandowski is also being linked with a move to north London, and it seems much less impossible. Medhi Benatia could be available this summer as he has failed to settle in Munich and the club are looking to strike a deal with Borussia Dortmund for defender Mats Hummels.

That would leave Benatia able to leave a city where he and his family have struggled to adapt to life. According to Sport Bild, Arsenal want the Moroccan to become first choice at the Emirates Stadium (presumably alongside Laurent Koscielny) next season.

However, look a little closer and you see their report quotes the Daily Star as a source. Benatia himself is also more interested in a return to Italy, where Juventus have been linked with him.

Lewandowski seems impossible to attain and the links to Benatia are extremely tenuous and unreliable. Nothing to see here, folks.

The only rumour that may have something to it is one linking fullback Rafinha with a switch.
