With Petr Čech almost certain to be Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper next season, Wojciech Szczesny is likely to be looking for somewhere to play.

The Polish goalkeeper has already spoken about the possibility of rejoining AS Roma for a second season on loan, and the Italian club is keen, but things may have become a little more complex.

According to reports coming out of Italy, the Serie A side are more interested in a permanent deal to keep Szczesny at the club.

Roma are already set to complete the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson, so a loan deal for Szczesny would become a little less of a priority: why would they develop our goalkeeper when they have their own permanent replacement?

Now, then, Luciano Spalletti and co. are hoping to conclude a deal to sign Szczesny on a permanent basis but are only willing to pay £10m, still £5m short of what Arsenal would want.

Szczesny and Arsenal still seem to believe he has a future as the number one in north London. Petr Čech will be 34 next season and, though he’s performed well since joining from Chelsea, his time is running out.

Finding a goalkeeper of Szczesny’s quality in two or three years may be difficult so it’s understandable that Arsenal want to keep him around. If Roma can’t make a good enough offer to ensure his long-term future is at the Emirates Stadium, he could have to find somewhere else to play next year.
