Picking up just two of the last 12 points available at the end of the season, a collapse from Tottenham allowed Arsenal to sneak above them.

It’s now 21 years since Spurs finished above the Gunners, something they’ve never achieved while Arsène Wenger has been at Arsenal.

As if it wasn’t funny enough for Arsenal fans, reading through Harry Kane’s post-match comments just manages to make things better.

“I think that’s probably the worst performance I’ve ever been involved with,” the striker said after his side lost 5-1 to an already relegated Newcastle United side. That’s despite Newcastle playing around half an hour with 10 men.

Spurs blew a chance to keep the title race going with a draw against Chelsea two weeks ago and ended up losing both remaining games, first against Southampton and then Newcastle.

“We still had a lot to play for, so it’s hard to put a finger on what went wrong. We just haven’t been good enough in the last few games – it’s not just Newcastle, we should never have lost to Southampton either. It probably started from drawing the West Brom game, but it’s hard to say exactly what went wrong.”

There will be Champions League football at White Hart Lane next season but, once again, they have to settle for being second best in north London.

“That definitely makes it harder because we know how much it means to the fans and how much it means to the club,” Kane said when asked about finishing below Arsenal, who won 4-0 against Aston Villa on the final day to finish second.

“When people think Arsenal had a bad season and we’ve had a good one, yet they still finish above us, it hurts.”

Ah well, Harry. Better luck next year.
