Mesut Özil had a fantastic season for Arsenal but the German playmaker has been left frustrated by the overall form of the side.

After topping the league at the end of December, a poor run of form saw the Gunners slip away, throwing points away against Liverpool, Stoke, Chelsea, Manchester United, Swansea City and more.

Ultimately, the season boiled down to securing a place in the Champions League.

“I think for us, in the end, it was important to qualify directly for the Champions League which is the second or third place,” Mesut Özil told Sport 360 on Monday. The Gunners went into the final day behind Tottenham Hotspur with little hope of catching their north London rivals.

However, a 5-1 defeat against Newcastle United opened the door and the Emirates Stadium celebrated another year as the best team in north London.

“To be second in the last game of the season and be on top of Tottenham was also good for us and our fans. It was a good finish to the season,” added the German.

“I think we dropped a lot of points that we shouldn’t have dropped like against smaller teams and I think that was the point in the season where as a team we weren’t strong enough to take just a point and go ahead.

“Especially after the Barcelona game we lost some points. That was a time when we weren’t good enough to just take points and go.”

The season is tinged with regret and disappointment but it did at least finish on a high note.

Hopefully there will be even more positive news in the next few months, when Özil sits down to discuss his future with the club after Euro 2016.
