Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery on his right knee, with a full recovery expected to take nine months.

The England international went down with the injury on Sunday afternoon and scans revealed significant damage to his cartilage.

Early signs were poor and Welbeck has now undergone surgery; he won’t be back in action for nine months.

The blow is a devastating one for a player who had only recently recovered from a 10-month lay-off to feature in Arsenal’s last few months of the current campaign.

Welbeck injured his left knee towards the end of last season and, after a serious of setbacks, had surgery in August. A long recovery finally ended in February, when he returned to score the winner against Leicester City in added time.

Since then, the England international has had the chance to establish himself as Arsène Wenger’s first choice striker and made Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad as he worked on his match fitness.

A shoe-in for Euro 2016, Welbeck is now out of the competition and out for half of next season.

It’s a devastating blow for a player who only recently worked so hard to recover.

Everyone at Daily Cannon is wishing Welbz a speedy recovery; hopefully he is back in action in nine months as planned.
