Manchester United secured fifth place in the final Premier League game of the season on Tuesday evening but the last touch of the campaign won Petr Čech the Golden Glove outright.

The Czech goalkeeper made it 16 clean sheets from 34 Arsenal appearances on Sunday as the Gunners beat Aston Villa 4-0, guaranteeing he would at least share the accolade with David De Gea.

On 15 clean sheets heading into the game, it looked like Manchester United and De Gea had earned the Golden Glove, to be shared with Čech, as they were 3-0 up at home against Bournemouth heading into stoppage time.

Then, suddenly, Chris Smalling scored an own goal.

That’s right, the last touch of the season was an own goal and it cost De Gea the Golden Glove, making Čech the outright winner.

It’s the former Chelsea goalkeeper’s fourth Golden Glove award, following the 2004/05, 2009/10, 2013/14 seasons. In 2013/14, Čech shared the award with Wojciech Szczesny of Arsenal, so will be happy to be able to claim it for himself this time around.

Congratulations, Petr!
