As with every summer, Arsenal are going to be linked with a lot of strikers in the coming weeks, but Mauro Icardi is one centre-forward who won’t be arriving in north London.

That’s according to, well, the player himself.

The 23-year-old Argentina is enjoying life at Internazionale under Roberto Mancini, where he is captain and a first team regular. For the time being, at least, he has admitted he has no need to move on.

“I have a contract until 2019 and there are a few years to go yet. I will absolutely stay here,” said the former Barcelona youth player.

“Do I want to become the new Javier Zanetti? Steady on, that’s a lot of years.

“I am happy to be here and to be wearing his armband. If I get to remain as many years as he did, then I’ll be even happier.”

Zanetti, another Argentine, was at Inter from 1994 until retirement in 2014. If Icardi truly is looking to follow in his footsteps, other clubs better look away.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with the 23-year-old this week who, after a hit and miss start to the campaign, has scored 16 times in 33 Serie A appearances this season. It’s taken him on to 52 goals in 105 career games for the Italian side and he clearly has no plan to stop just yet.

A move for Alvaro Morata could be a better avenue for Arsenal to pursue if the club wants to bring in a striker from Serie A, otherwise we’ll have to look elsewhere to replace Danny Welbeck after news of his horrible knee injury.
