Roy Hodgson named a provisional England squad for Euro 2016 on Monday morning, three days later than played due to an injury to Danny Welbeck.

The Arsenal forward injured his knee last weekend and required surgery, which has ruled him out for nine months.

It was a huge blow, coming after a 10-month lay-off Welbeck had already endured, and Hodgson delayed his squad announcement in order to reshuffle his pack.

“It did disrupt the plan because a lot of what we do is about balancing the team,” explained the England boss.

“We had a good qualification campaign and some players who have really helped you in that campaign, you don’t want to lose them at the last minute through injury.”

Welbeck scored six goals during Euro 2016 qualifying, helping England top their group, but he won’t be able to make the tournament itself.

Speaking to the media, Hodgson expressed how he feels for the Arsenal striker and explained what England would miss.

“The type of player he is, the positions he plays, the options he gives us with his play: when he got injured we missed that and we missed him.

“I’m very sad for him, he’s worked so hard to get fit again, as has Jack (Wilshere), and it’s a pity their chances of making the final 23 can be taken away from them through injury.”

Jack Wilshere is fit again and was the only Arsenal player to make Hodgson’s final squad.
