Arsenal have been linked with a move for Mario Götze by German publication Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The Bayern Munich midfielder’s future doesn’t appear to lie in Bavaria and the Gunners are one of a number of clubs linked with a move for him this summer.

On Tuesday, Bayern confirmed the captures of Renato Sanches and Mats Hummels as they look to enter a new era under Carlo Ancelotti – the Italian manager reportedly explicitly asked for the young Portuguese talent.

As he prepares for next season, the Italian is getting his squad ready and there doesn’t seem to be a space for playmaker Mario Götze.

A controversial move in 2013 saw Götze sign for Bayern Munich for around €37m, leaving fans of Borussia Dortmund devastated. The crown jewel of German football at the time the midfielder, other than scoring the winner in a World Cup final, has failed to deliver.

Truthfully, he just hasn’t been a great fit for Pep Guardiola’s brand of football and it leaves Bayern at a crossroads: Götze’s contract ends in a year, do they reward him with a new one or look to sell him now?

Well, SZ say Ancelotti has told the midfielder he can start looking elsewhere. Götze won’t want to spend another year on the bench and could be available for around €25m.

Liverpool are one possible destination. Former Dortmund head coach Jürgen Klopp is at Anfield now and Götze would reportedly be keen to rejoin him in an attempt to recapture the form of his breakout seasons. There are already plenty of attacking midfielders on Merseyside but if he could get Götze in, Klopp wouldn’t hesitate.

Another interested party are Juventus, but Götze’s wage would exceed their top earner (Paul Pogba) by far.

Former club Borussia Dortmund would love to seal the signature of Götze, getting one over on their domestic rivals and gaining a huge talent at the same time. Götze is, of course, still young enough to have an incredible career. Maybe Bayern wouldn’t sell to Thomas Tuchel’s side.

And then there’s Arsenal. Arsène Wenger tried to sign Götze on more than one occasion as a teenager and could have his chance once again now. However, it could come at the cost of cutting his losses on Jack Wilshere or Alexi Oxlade-Chamberlain, or even halting the progress of Alex Iwobi.

It looks like Mario Götze will be on the move this summer and Arsenal, frankly, would be mad not to throw their hat in the ring.
