As the season comes to a close, Arsenal’s loanees will start returning to the club.

With the immediate futures of David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny still undecided, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will hope to stake a claim for the number two role next season.

Petr Čech will remain Arsenal’s number one but Martinez, who impressed when given opportunities in the 2014/15 campaign, will be 24 shortly after next season begins and his Arsenal future is on the line.

This season, he was at Wolves, where he made 13 Championship appearances. We spoke to Thomas Baugh from www.wolvesblog.com to see how Martinez got on, what Wolves fans made of him, and whether or not Thomas thinks he has a future at Arsenal.

Here’s what Thomas had to say:

“I think Emi Martinez should be heading back to Arsenal disappointed about how his loan spell at Wolves played out.

“At the start of the season, he was playing tug of war with our long standing first choice Carl Ikeme with both guilty of making individual errors to surrender the shirt. Kenny Jackett was only too happy to chop and change between them while this went on. He then got injured around Christmas and was never able to force his way back into the side with Ikeme showing greater consistency and Jackett preferring stability over the second half of the campaign.

“There’s no doubting he’s got both the ability and the stature to be a great player, but like many Arsenal goalkeepers, he’s held back by a propensity for silly mistakes. He made a few penalty saves at the start of the season but cancelled those out with questionable positioning and decision making that cost the team goals.

“I’d happily have him back at Wolves as competition for Ikeme in the hope he could develop into a more complete goalkeeper over time, but I’d be surprised he ended up making an impact at the Emirates.”

Not a glowing review, but injuries clearly didn’t help the Argentine’s cause.

With David Ospina off to the Copa América this summer, and Wojciech Szczesny and Petr Čech likely to be playing at Euro 2016, Martinez could have a chance to impress when pre-season begins in July.

Whether or not he takes it will probably determine his Arsenal future.
