With the news that Frank de Boer is leaving Ajax confirmed on Thursday morning, there are going to be questions surrounding Dennis Bergkamp’s future.

The Dutchman has been de Boer’s assistant manager at Ajax, where they played together, for the past five years and Ajax have confirmed Bergkamp will stay on when the new head coach arrives.

De Boer is being linked with Roberto Martinez’ job at Everton and many had thought Bergkamp would stay with him when he moved on from his current role but that isn’t the case.

Speaking to Martin Keown recently, Bergkamp spoke about protecting Johann Cruyff’s Ajax legacy.

I feel I’m not finished here. I want to be alert, now that Cruyff has gone, that it doesn’t change. There are many, many people who would like to change it again and I want to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

With that in mind, it appears that Bergkamp’s future is sealed for a little while yet.

Arsenal fans would love to see the club legend return to London and take up a coaching role eventually but we’ll be kept waiting a little while.

Ajax also employ former players Edwin van der Sar, Jaap Stam, Marc Overmars and recently added Patrick Kluivert to their staff as they hope to continue protecting the club’s traditions.

Bergkamp is seen as a major part of that and is happy to stay so, right now, there’s no chance of him leaving.
