If Arsenal land Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach they would set a new record for the most money paid for a Swiss player.

It’s expected that a bid of around 47m Swiss Francs would be needed to land the 23-year-old, which is approximately £33.5m.

Currently, the highest transfer fee paid for a Swiss player stands at the £17.1m that Napoli paid Udinese for Gokhan Inler.

Shaqiri’s transfer from Bayern comes in second place with Blerim Dzemaili, costing £9.2m, in third.

This transfer rumour is certainly one with a feck-load of smoke to it and it’s hard not to see some sort of fire blazing away.

It seems that the Germans are trying to drive this deal through as quickly as possible with their sources being behind many of the leaks. That’s no bad thing given how ponderous Arsene Wenger can be during the summer.

If their tactics give him a boot up the Arsenal, I’m not going to be the one to say that they should wind their neck in.
