Arsenal have long been linked to Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell but could be set to miss out on him this summer as he’s been charmed by the idea of playing for Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp.

The defender has been subject of a number of Arsenal bids. With a contract ending a year from now, Leicester will almost certainly sell him this summer unless he agrees a new deal, which still looks unlikely.

Arsenal had every reason to be confident even though the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool have shown an interest: Kieran Gibbs is 26 and clear second choice to Nacho Monreal, he would probably leave if Arsenal signed a younger understudy.

Chilwell would then, in theory, be backup to Monreal for a season or two before making the role his own.

However, Goal are reporting that the idea of playing for Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp at Anfield will be too much for Chilwell to reject. With the Reds prepared to bid £8m for the 19-year-old, it looks like Arsenal’s chances are fading away.

The news is a bitter blow to Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger, who has been a pivotal figure in signings in the past. Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez have both said he convinced them to join Arsenal and they aren’t the only ones.

Over the years, Wenger has always given young players chances in north London and that’s seen them leave or reject the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United to play at Highbury or the Emirates Stadium.

Is that coming to an end?
