With one summer signing almost already secured, attention may turn to reinforcing the Arsenal frontline and defence.

According to fairly reliable French outlet RMC, the Gunners will launch a bid for Bayern Munich defender Medhi Benatia this week.

The Moroccan centre-half only joined the German champions two years ago but has described his time in Germany as the most difficult period of his life and looks set to move on this summer.

Before his move to Bavaria, Benatia was a rock in the AS Roma defence and widely considered one of the best defenders in Italy. His form earned him a place in Pep Guardiola’s plans when Javi Martinez picked up a serious injury but things haven’t worked out on or off the field in Germany.

Among other things, Benatia’s wife has reportedly missed life in Italy and the defender’s wages were leaked. Now the 29-year-old will move on, but where to?

Juventus have been linked, should he want a return to Serie A, as have Manchester United and Chelsea.

With a dodgy injury record, Benatia may not be the wisest signing for the Gunners this summer. He’s already 29, just a little younger than Arsenal defenders Per Mertesacker (31) and Laurent Koscielny (30), and moving forward it wouldn’t make a great deal of sense.

Arsenal already have Calum Chambers and Gabriel at the club but Arsène Wenger seems a little unconvinced right now and definitely could move for a defender before the transfer window closes. Benatia, though, would be a slightly odd buy.

Nonetheless, Get French Football News seem certain there’s some truth to the reports.
