We have now reached the mid-season break and we can have a look at the players’ grades so far for 2016.

The League form has been average and the title is 90% lost while there has been success with an FA Cup win to mitigate the feeling left by the League results.

Our League stats so far are as follows:

  • Seven points
  • Played five
  • W2 D1 L2
  • GF 5 GA 6,
  • Lost against the two main title contenders

The Cup form is:

  • W2 D2
  • Won the FA Women’s Cup for the 14th time

Here are the mid-season grades for the players.

No grading:

Jodie Taylor, Emma Byrne, Vyan Sampson and Chloe Kelly have played zero official games in 2016 and therefore cannot be graded.

There is certainly a question mark on Taylor as she was heralded as a big signing for the club and has not played any game yet.

This is obviously down to injury and an ITC problem as well that was solved apparently as she was set to start against Doncaster Belles.

D+

Fara Williams: She has so far not performed at the level expected from an England top quality international player, except in the FA Cup final.

Jemma Rose: Recurrent mistakes in big games cost her place in the team. She is unfortunately likely to sit on the bench for a while, until one of the two centre-backs looses form or get injured.

C-

Leah Williamson: The young midfielder has been played out of position and made a few mistakes that cost the team a couple of goals. It’s puzzling to see her not getting a chance in midfield, where she would help the team a lot.

Asisat Oshoala: She has not found her place in the team yet, she has played up front for most of the games being in and out of the team. Time is on her side and she will get used to playing with the other players. She does not bring enough as the focal point of the team. Certainly better in the FA Cup final on the wing but finishing was poor on the day. I am not sure centre-forward is her best position.

C

Emma Mitchell lost her left-back spot to Williamson for most of the season and got it back for the FA Cup final. It’s a bizarre situation to be dropped for a midfielder who was making mistakes as well.

Vicky Losada was in and out of the side and had good games and also poor games. It’s hard to find consistency in such a situation. She also tends to forget to defend in central areas and let runners go past her.

Marta Corredera is playing on the wing or in defence, another player who is in and out of the side and therefore it is difficult to get a good consistent performance level for her.

C+

Danielle Van De Donk: The new signing is another player who is in and out of the side and has excellent performances, like an hat-trick against Sunderland, and then gets dropped or has an anonymous game. Still getting used to the FA WSL tempo and physicality. A good signing very quick and strong technically.

Alex Scott leading the side by example, the experienced right-back is a first choice and has had a good performance level to keep the shirt.

B-

Sari Van Veenendaal: She is very reliable and made important saves in penalty shootouts. She has not made many mistakes so far.

Katie McCabe: The young Irish winger has shown a lot of promise on the left wing, taking over from Ubogagu and Yankey, and should have a great future at the club.

B

Natalia Pablos Sanchon: Never let the team down when called upon. She does not get much playing time despite being a proven goalscorer and the team not firing on all cylinders.

Josephine Henning: Missed the beginning of the season due to an injury, then was sitting on the bench for a while and has been superb since she was put in the starting 11.

Jordan Nobbs: You can see how much she is missed when she is not around. The team needs her commanding presence and runs from midfield.

A

Danielle Carter: A fantastic first half of the season, scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final as well.

Casey Stoney: Solid, reliable, so important for the Arsenal defence.

Kelly Smith: The playmaker cannot play as many games as before but when she is on the pitch, she makes a huge difference.

Dominique Janssen: Superb in the holding role, carrying on from her first season with the club, it is bizarre to see her dropped on a regular basis as she is the form player and consistent as well.
