Arsenal won the women’s FA Cup for a record 14th time after they beat Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday, however, they could, and perhaps should have won by about five.

The Gunners were at it from the first whistle and nearly took the lead in under a minute.

Danielle Carter, on fire for the whole game and voted Player of the Match by the BBC, tried to lob the keeper from around 25-yeards out only to see her effort narrowly miss the bar and land on the roof of the net with the Chelsea keeper stranded.

Arsenal seemed to surprise Chelsea with their lineup and formation, playing a high-press that the Blues struggled to deal with for the whole match, but it was a screaming curler from the corner of the box from Carter that opened the scoring for Arsenal.

Before the break, Asisat Oshoalo had the chance to make it two, but she opted to try and square the ball to no-one in the middle.

Arsenal deservedly took their lead into the break.

Chelsea made a few changes to their lineup and formation at halftime hoping to get into the game but Arsenal started the second in the same way they had dominated the first – all over their London rivals.

In fact, they could have quite easily scored three in the first three minutes after the break and Vicky Losada will still be wondering how she hit the bar with a free header just six yards out (she was incorrectly flagged for offside so the miss didn’t really matter, but come on!).

Wave after wave of Arsenal attack hit Chelsea but a combination of poor choices when it mattered most and finishing meant that the scoreline did not come close to displaying their dominance.

Arsenal gave Chelsea’s flair players no time at all, swarming them and giving them no chance to find any rhythm. It was an excellent display from a side with a massive point to prove against their rich neighbours who have outshone them in recent seasons. They had clear instructions from Pedro Losa and everyone executed them superbly.

The only thing to let them down on the day was their finishing. In every other area, the players put their bodies on the line to hold onto their lead and showed 100% commitment, but it wasn’t just a display of last-ditch blocks and force, far from it. Arsenal outplayed Chelsea in every area.

A great victory that will be a massive boost to the ladies side for the rest of the season.
