Heavily linked with Granit Xhaka, many Arsenal fans are hoping the Swiss arrives this summer to solve our midfield woes.

The Borussia Mönchengladbach star has been open about an ambition to play in England but Gladbach aren’t willing to talk unless they receive a huge offer.

There’s a €30m release clause in Xhaka’s contract but that isn’t active until the summer of 2017: if anyone wants him this year, they’re going to have to pay significantly more.

Arsenal look to be in pole position and, according to most reports, aren’t being particularly put off by Gladbach’s demands. A bid of £34m would probably be needed to seal a move and, as of now, most media outlets seem to believe Arsenal are bidding at around £28m with talks ongoing.

But a spanner was recently thrown into the works: a report from Express (via SportBild) that Bayern Munich want the player and will tell him to wait a year so they can sign him for the release clause fee.

Is it true?

Well, Express are known as a bit of a Gladbach source. That could mean one of two things: it’s accurate or Gladbach are trying to push the price up this summer.

There’s another thing, though. Many seemed to translate this news as if it was concrete interest from Bayern. In fact, they only said it could be an option and that whether or not Gladbach qualify for the Champions League will be a big factor.

Personally, I think Arsenal are the favourites for his signature. Let’s confirm Champions League football for next season and then see if a deal can be wrapped up.
