Finally back on the pitch, Jack Wilshere is refusing to change the way he plays.

It’s thanks to his style that the England international has suffered a number of late tackles and significant injuries in his career but he doesn’t believe he can do anything about it.

You would certainly lose something from the midfielder’s game if he stopped attempting to accelerate with the ball and dribble through tight spaces but, with his career stagnating, something will have to give eventually.

“I don’t think there is anything I can do differently,” Wilshere told Arsenal Player“All my injuries have been impact injuries and I have been a little bit unfortunate at times when I have maybe overrun the ball a little bit, so maybe I can work on dribbling with the ball closer to my foot.”

It’s something Arsène Wenger has also said in the past but, really, you have to wonder how much longer Wilshere can continue without adapting.

“I’m not one of those players who is blessed with Theo’s pace who can run behind you. When I’m on the ball, I have to get close to [the defender], which is going to cause him to attempt to tackle me or mistime it as we have seen in the past. That is part of my game.”

Wilshere’s passing range is good but it is his ability to change speed and work past defenders that truly makes him a quality player.

With that in mind, the 24-year-old is happy to look at his game and make tweaks without losing what makes him special.

“When I was injured, I read a few things and I was thinking maybe they were right. Maybe I should pass it a little bit more or a little bit quicker, but as soon as I get back on the ball and there is an opportunity for me to run at someone, that is what I want to do. I don’t think I can change.”

Dribbling more cleanly would be a fantastic start. Wilshere’s injuries have, at times, been caused by his over-eagerness on the ball.

There have been tackles which Wilshere invited to come by not moving the ball on quickly enough and there have been challenges he himself has gone into when the ball wasn’t really there to be one.

Invariably, he comes out hurt.

Finally fit again, the midfielder played for the first time all season in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Sunderland and knows how crucial it is to build his fitness now.

“I have just got to train every day. I have never really had injuries with my muscles, or any problems like that. It is just impact injuries. Hopefully I can avoid them.”
