Alan Shearer stands by his comments from earlier in the season that Arsenal need a world-class striker and he’s completely correct.

At the start of the season, you know, when it looked like Arsenal might actually do something and both Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott were having a party, many rubbished the Newcastle hero’s claims that we needed to buy a big name striker. Many, myself included, were concerned that buying in new talent would push out Giroud, a player that Wenger has stood by for a long time, and we agreed that the Frenchman wasn’t all that bad.

Skip to April and Arsenal are once again battling for fourth after being clear at the top of the League at Christmas. Giroud has been dropped because he can’t find the net, Theo sometimes comes on in the last 10 minutes to fall over his own feet and Welbeck is only just returning from months on the sidelines.

Speaking recently, Shearer repeated his earlier point that we need a new striker.

“They won’t win the league until they sign a top class, world-class striker, who can get 25 or 30 goals a season,” he said.

“I’ve been saying all season that they’re at least two players, top players short, and my view hasn’t changed on that.”

Now, I actually agree. For a team like Arsenal, players who blow hot and cold (or mainly cold in Theo’s case) just aren’t good enough. We need some top quality to spur (no pun intended) this team on before they start leaving.
