With more fans than ever set to protest at Saturday’s game against Norwich City, Arsène Wenger is wary of an ‘agenda’ threatening the club.

A disappointing end to the season has fans voicing complaints about the manager and the way the club is run with more volume than in the past and Wenger believes there are certain ‘groups’ turning Arsenal fans against the club.

“There are some groups of people who try to manipulate our fans and they do that well,” said the manager. “I believe, apart from a personal agenda and a big ego, there’s not a lot behind it. That’s what I think.”

Just last week, Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp (both employed by Sky) brought up the Luis Suárez transfer talk of almost three years ago and misinterpreted the entire situation.

It’s all well and good, some people get things wrong, but much of their audience doesn’t think critically about what they say and accept the respected figure’s opinion.

They were wrong, but they brought up another stick to beat Arsenal with, a stick with which they could push a narrative. The mainstream media seem to thrive when Arsenal are struggling and it feels like the manager has had enough.

Not that he’d admit that, of course. Wenger wouldn’t mention who he was referring to.

“I don’t know,” he said when pressed for more.

“I honestly don’t worry too much about that. What’s important for me in football is the qualities of the game, the values we represent.”

“This club is hugely respected and loved all over the world and the quality of our game is very important and to perform no matter what the circumstance.

“The rest: the club is in a very strong situation and you want your fans to be behind the team.”
