With two draws in as many games before Thursday evening’s defeat of West Bromwich Albion, Arsenal looked likely to be in a fight for Champions League football.

The win puts four points between the Gunners and Manchester United, in fifth, once again. It also moves Arsène Wenger’s men back above Manchester City into third and, though winning the title would require a miracle, Wenger wants his side to finish as high as possible.

With four games to go, Arsenal are five points behind north London rivals Spurs. Is there any chance of catching them?

“We want to finish as high as possible. You never know what happens in front of you. There can still be twists and turns but we want to win our games,” Wenger said after the convincing 2-0 win on Thursday.

“We came out of West Ham and Crystal Palace thinking we had produced the quality and didn’t get the points.

“If you look at our last five games, we won at Everton, we won against Watford, we had two draws and we won today. The regret we have is being in the lead against West Ham and being in the lead against Crystal Palace and not getting the points.”

Those draws against West Ham and Crystal Palace remains a huge source of frustration. Arsenal didn’t finish either match off when in the lead and four more points would currently have the team just a point behind Spurs, who are considered still in the title race.

There will be hope in north London that West Brom are more resilient on Monday when they face Tottenham.

Arsenal’s next game is on Sunday at Sunderland and, all going well, the Gunners could close the gap with Spurs to just two points.

“I don’t know where we’ll finish but we have to give everything in every game,” Wenger insisted.

“We go to Sunderland, Sunderland fight not to go down. That will be a battle and we have to prepare for that.”
