In an otherwise poor week for Arsenal, Mesut Özil had something to smile about as he was nominated for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.

According to Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger, Özil is more than worthy of his nomination and the award.

He’s been more efficient,” said the Arsenal boss. “I think he’s created more chances and he’s scored especially more goals. In a guy like Özil you see 10-15 goals and I hope he will get to 10 by the end of the season.”

Though you could criticise Özil for not scoring enough, he does take his chances well when they’re presented. Trouble is, he’s the player always creating the chances at Arsenal.

This season the German has managed 18 Premier League assists, seven more than any other player and the most of any player in Europe’s top rated leagues. Add his six Premier League goals to his tally and Özil has directly contributed to 24 of Arsenal’s 55 goals in the league this season.

“He provides the chances, he’s miles ahead on assists and the two combined – goalscoring and assists – means he deserves this type of award.”

He certainly does. The best creative player in Europe, it’s just a shame those around him haven’t performed at the same level or Arsenal would be destined for glory this year. Contract talks are coming up and the Gunners will have to convince Özil, the best player in England, to stay at the Emirates Stadium.
