Southampton are apparently keen on luring Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back to St. Marys with Jose Fonte ‘having a word’ with his former teammate.

With two years still left on his contract, I don’t imagine many think that he will be going anywhere this summer despite his horrendous season.

When not out with injury, the Ox looked some distance from the youngster who was developing well until he first did his knee against Aston Villa on the opening day of the 13/14 season.

The Ox has had no shortage of alleged admirers with Chelsea and West Ham also said to be keen on the Englishman, but if a former Southampton man is to leave the Emirates, the smart money would be on Theo Walcott rather than his younger teammate.

A loan spell might not be a bad idea for the Ox when he returns, however.

His form has been shocking and it’s unlikely to have been improved by being side lined.

Can Arsenal really afford to carry him until he plays himself back into form?

I wouldn’t think so, not with the talent we have at the club now with Danny Welbeck back and Alex Iwobi breaking through.

As for letting him re-join Southampton, I can’t see that happening at all unless the player specifically asks for it.
