Like most of us, Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger is surprised that Mesut Özil didn’t make the PFA Players’ Team of the Year.

The team for the 2015/16 season was revealed on Thursday afternoon and Özil was snubbed by his fellow Premier League players despite being named on the six-man shortlist for Player of the Year.

It’s a bizarre situation as the German playmaker has created more goals (and more chances) than any other player not just in the Premier League but in all of Europe this season.

If six goals and 18 assists in the league – a huge 41% of all of Arsenal’s goals – aren’t impressive enough to garner votes then I don’t know what is.

“It’s a surprise for me,” said Arsène Wenger after the team voted for by Premier League players was released. “I cannot explain it, because it’s the players who vote. I don’t know why they did not pick him.

“Yeah [he deserves to be in the team]. When you are top of the assists, usually that’s a sign of quality that should get you a place in a top team.”

Incredibly, Manchester City’s Sergio Agüero was ignored for a fifth consecutive season – the Argentine has never been voted into the side. That’s despite reaching 100 Premier League goals at the second quickest rate ever this week.

Something isn’t quite right with the players in England’s top division.

They did, however, vote Héctor Bellerín into the side. At least something was right about the selected XI!
