Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil is among the nominees for the PFA Players’ Player of the Season award.

The German midfielder has been superb for the Gunners throughout the campaign, scoring six Premier League goals and assisting a further 18 from midfield. No other player in England’s top flight has created more than 11 goals.

Poor form since the turn of the year has seen Arsenal slip out of contention for the Premier League title, but the side was in the race up until now and Özil’s impressive form was the main reason.

Crucial assists in big games against Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City helped Arsenal to invaluable points. Whenever the side has struggled and been desperate for inspiration, the German has delivered and is well worth his nomination.

Though the season will end disappointingly for Arsenal, Özil could at least crown a superb individual campaign with the appreciation of his peers. It’s quite the turnaround after the midfielder was ridiculed for his form in his first year at Arsenal.

Good luck to Mesut, who will face stiff competition. Three Leicester City players have also been nominated alongside one player each from Tottenham and West Ham.

Nominees: Dimitri Payet, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Mesut Özil, N’Golo Kanté, Riyad Mahrez.
