Mesut Ozil has admitted that although our chances of winning the title are limited, he’d be delighted if we won it, not for himself but for Arsene Wenger.

The playmaker, who has been rumoured to want to leave if the boss stays in charge of the Gunners next season, hailed Wenger as an extraordinary manager and gushed about the Frenchman being the reason he came to north London in the first place.

“Looking at our season so far, we have to be honest and admit that we screwed up ourselves,” the German said.

“We did not play to our potential in the games against the so-called smaller teams. You immediately get punished for that in the Premier League.

“But we still have a chance of winning the title. We have to hope Leicester and Tottenham slip up and then make the most of it.

“I would be delighted for (Arsene) Wenger if we win the title. He played a major role in my decision to join Arsenal. He was desperate to sign me. Everybody knows he is an extraordinary manager. He is always hungry for success, has a lot of experience and always takes his time for the players. He helps players develop.”

Although most of the media are running with the comment that we’ve screwed up the title, what jumps out from Ozil’s interview with Spox is his immense gratitude and respect for the manager. This makes it pretty clear that the rumours that he wants to leave because of the manager and potentially rejoin Real Madrid seem completely false, which is a relief. Despite most of us knowing it was rubbish, Ozil is very, very good and the possibility of him leaving doesn’t seem as far-fetched as it did at the beginning of the season.
