Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy returned from injury at the weekend to play for Bordeaux before Jon Toral only featured as a substitute for Birmingham City on Tuesday evening.

Debuchy had been out since February with a muscle injury but was back against Olympique Marseille and helped Bordeaux keep a clean sheet, playing over 80 minutes in the goalless draw.

Bordeaux are nine points clear of the relegation zone in Ligue 1 and 10 points from the Europa League spot in fourth: with just five games to go, their season is essentially over.

The same doesn’t apply to Birmingham City, where Jon Toral has impressed on loan all season. Having been named player of the season at St. Andrews, the Spanish midfielder hasn’t started in their last two games. The first, at the weekend, was a 2-0 win against Reading but on Tuesday evening leaving Toral on the bench for the first hour may prove costly.

At home, Birmingham lost to Leeds United in their game in hand and now find themselves nine points off the play-off spots with just five games remaining. It looks like that gap will be too much to make up.

None of Arsenal’s loanees will be in action on Wednesday but a big weekend is coming up with Roma in the driving seat for a third-place finish in Serie A, an Old Firm derby for Gedion Zelalem, and Hull City still in the play-off places in the Championship.
