The season is coming to a close and Arsenal won’t be winning any silverware but Mesut Özil does still have a chance of being crowned PFA Players’ Player of the Year.

The German playmaker is up against some tough opposition and the award is expected to go to Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez (both Leicester City), or Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur).

However, those players are nowhere to be seen at the top of the rankings for the season as calculated by spreadex.com.

Using their player performance spread, they rank Özil as the clear player of the season, beating David Silva and Cesc Fàbregas, who aren’t even nominated for the award.

Christian Eriksen is ranked as the best player at Spurs and Riyad Mahrez, hot favourite for the PFA award, is down in 11th despite being Leicester City’s highest rated player for the campaign.

Speaking about Özil, Spreadex spokesman Andy MacKenzie said:

“He is often criticised for looking disinterested in games, but the stats don’t lie when it comes to assessing Özil’s contribution during matches.

“With 18 assists and far more completed attacking passes than any of his challengers, the German is the number one player in the Premier League according to our Player Performance stats.”

Well, there you have it. The stats don’t lie.
