Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud may be struggling to find form but he is still looking forward to representing France at Euro 2016 this summer.

In any normal situation the forward, who has only scored twice in his last 19 Arsenal appearances, may be sweating over his spot in the national team but he is certain to make the squad for the European Championships with Karim Benzema banned by the French Football Federation.

Didier Deschamps is a long term fan of the Arsenal striker and he’s sure to be involved in front of the home fans. France host this summer’s competition and Giroud is excited to feature.

“Of course there is added pressure, but it is also really exciting,” the striker said as he looked ahead to the tournament. “Having the whole nation behind you is very motivating.”

France last hosted a competition in 1998 and the added motivation inspired a team including a number of Arsenal stars to lift the World Cup, defeating Brazil in Paris in the final.

Emmanuel Petit’s goal in the final, assisted by Patrick Vieira, sealed the win and inspired the Daily Mirror to run the front page headline “Arsenal win the World Cup” the following morning.

Giroud would, naturally, love to repeat the achievement 18 years later but is not getting carried away.

“I think you have to take every game as it comes and not make any assumptions as anything can happen on pitch. The groups are still competitive, and I believe that this is down to the quality of European football is always developing.”
