Arsenal are allegedly interested in signing Benfica’s Renato Sanches, a player so coveted that United have allegedly lodged another ridiculously insane bid for a teenager.

Although highly-rated, those in the know believe that it is too soon for the player to move, that he isn’t ready for the challenges he would face, but that hasn’t stopped United, who are willing to pay £46m for the 18-year-old.

Yes. £46m.

This is what the new TV money allows clubs, if they are carefree enough, to do – bid £46m for a player who only made the step up from the Benfica B team midway through this season.

To think that Arsenal would have any part in a bidding war that involves fees like this is farcical, and that’s a good thing.

While we moan and whinge about the club not spending money, do we really want to see them go down the United route of just throwing vast sums at kids?

Will United’s gamble pay off?

Perhaps.

Talks between the two clubs are said to be going well and they could well get their man because, let’s face it, £46m (€60m) would be hard for a club like Benfica to turn down.

But price alone is no guarantee of success.

If it was, Andy Carroll would still be at Liverpool and Fernando Torres’ name wouldn’t be forever linked with the words ‘£50m flop’.

Sanches is under contract until 2021 having just signed a new deal in December. His release clause is said to be €60m
