I know, I know, you’ve heard it before, but Arsenal really were supposedly close to signing another top player.

This time it’s Saúl Niguez, who just happened to score a wonder goal for Atlético Madrid in their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening.

The Spanish midfielder was out of favour in Madrid back in January and looked set to be moving to London according to El Confidencial‘s Kike Marin.

Bags were packed, fee was agreed, all that was required was a signature.

Then Tiago fractures his leg a month before the window opened and, well, the rest is history.

Saúl has a release clause of €45m and Manchester United have also been watching him. Unfortunately, Barcelona have the first option on any deal for the player. With that in mind, we can safely assume Arsenal’s chances of signing him have gone.

The Gunners moved on to Mohamed Elneny, signing the Egyptian from Basel in January, and he’s proven to be a hit.

For this upcoming summer there are links with Granit Xhaka of Borussia Mönchengladbach as well as Leicester City’s N’Golo Kanté. On top of all that, Jack Wilshere is fit again.

So, really, looks like Saúl won’t end up in north London.
