One goal at Camp Nou from Mohamed Elneny was a big positive on Wednesday night, but it was the only one of Arsenal’s 20 shots to find the back of the net.

In truth that isn’t such a big deal. None of the chances created were truly clearcut and Arsenal’s finishing on Wednesday didn’t really hold the team back. We created chances that aren’t tucked away every time and scored one.

Nonetheless, finishing has been a big issue in other games this season. Even recently crucial games against Swansea City and Watford have seen Arsenal lose after failing to punish the opposition. Arsène Wenger, though, isn’t worried.

“I always believe, let’s improve the quality of our game and then the strikers will benefit from that. It’s always delicate to blame one or two individuals when you don’t score goals,” said the boss. And that’s true. Arsenal fans seem to pin all the blame on whoever is up front, screaming for a better striker.

However, the striker isn’t always at fault. Wide players and midfielders miss chances, as Alexis Sánchez has done all season, but the blame is always unfairly pinned on Olivier Giroud or Danny Welbeck.

“We have one or two quality strikers and if we produce the quality of the game we produced at Barcelona our strikers will score goals,” Wenger insisted.

“We create opportunities. If you look at the numbers in the PL we are one of the best if not the best at creating goalscoring opportunities. Maybe we even have to improve the quality of our goalscoring opportunities.”

Arsenal certainly create enough chances but, as the manager has said this season already, finishing is cyclical. Sometimes you score eight from 12 shots, sometimes you don’t score for 20 shots.

These things are prone to bouts of variance but Arsenal’s strikers are good enough and their finishing will come back around.
