As it so often is around this time of year, a defeat at the weekend was followed up by reports that Arsenal have a lot of money to spend this summer.

Of course that money will only be used should the manager look to reinforce his squad but, right now, he won’t comment on that. Speaking on Tuesday morning, Arsène Wenger was more interested in talking about his current squad than hypothetical transfers but he did admit the money is there.

“I think if we want to buy at the end of the season money will be available,” the Arsenal boss said. However, focus is very much on the present and the title race, which no signings can impact.

“We want to influence our performance and results and the money, until the end of the season, will not help us.”

The Gunners are five points behind Leicester City and three behind Spurs in this huge week. A good result is needed on Wednesday evening against Swansea City before the north London derby takes place on Saturday afternoon. It’s a pivotal week.

Focus needs to be on the current squad and the imminent fixtures, this is a key part of the season and Arsenal could slip away from the title race with just one or two more bad results. Let’s look at Swansea and then Spurs before we even start to wonder how much money will be spent this summer.
