Ainsley Maitland-Niles grabbed an assist and conceded a late penalty as Ipswich drew 2-2 at Bolton on Tuesday night.

The Arsenal youngster lofted in a free-kick which was headed home by Christophe Berra to give the Tractor Boys a two-goal lead. Bolton pulled one back through Lawrie Wilson on the half-volley, just 80 seconds later, but it was the 97th minute when AMN’s luck ran out.

He was caught out by a short corner and left 2-v-1, but although he won the ball initially, he tried to be too smart, was robbed, and the penalty was an inevitability.

His boss, Mick McCarthy, was not for pointing fingers at the 18-year-old. He told the press  “We’ve all done it; we’ve all made mistakes. I’ve made them when I’ve been a lot older and a lot wiser than Ainsley.

“He is a kid, give him a bit of loving. That’s what we need to do.”
