Much maligned of late, Aaron Ramsey was moved into a wide position for Saturday’s north London derby and responded with a goal.

The Welshman has faced plenty of criticism but on the right he helped reinforce Arsenal’s midfield, winning the ball back well and troubling Spurs by attempting to overload central areas.

After a sloppy start to the game, Ramsey’s hard work paid off and he managed to open the scoring towards the end of the first half.

“I anticipated Hector maybe pulling his shot a bit and thankfully it fell to me,” Ramsey said to Arsenal.com after the match. “It was one of those ones that you just react to quickly and I was glad to see it go in.”

Despite falling behind and going down to 10 men, Arsenal rescued a point with Alexis Sánchez netting an equaliser.

“It was important after back-to-back defeats to come here and try to get a result. I thought in the first half we did well, but they came out in the second half and got the two goals in quick succession. We were under the cosh a bit but we carried on and got the equaliser.”

Arsenal have had a lot of critics over the last week or two, with pundits and fans mentioning a lack of spirit and character in the dressing room. Ramsey, though, believes Saturday’s comeback was proof the Gunners can fight back when things are going against them.

“Of course, it is always difficult (with 10 men), especially against a top team like them, but we did show great character to come back from 2-1 down.”
