Mesut Ozil was named German Player of the Year underlying the great season he has been having that sees him just two assists shy of Thierry Henry’s Premier League record.

The announcement was made in January and the Germans took the opportunity to present him with the award before their game against England.

Blowing a two-goal lead to go down to a bunch of Tottenham morons, Germany will be no doubt shaking their heads and wondering how they managed to lose to goals from Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Eric Dier, but lose they did.

Ozil enjoyed a quiet game, but did pass the ball to Toni Kroos for the Real Madrid man to shoot pass a crocked Jack Butland to open the scoring. We don’t really think you can call it an assist, but some are.

I’m sure Mesut won’t mind.
