Paul Merson once again decided to hit out at Arsene Wenger in his weekly column but this time he has a point.

The former Arsenal and England star responded to the boss’ comments that he was bored of being asked about his future at the club. However, as Merson points out, if he doesn’t want to be repeatedly asked these questions, imagine how bored the fans are of finishing fourth.

“Arsene Wenger says he’s bored of people asking him about Arsenal fans being frustrated. Well, they’re bored of finishing fourth!” Merson said in his Daily Star column.

“We’ve all seen the banners and heard the boos and the stick. But the fans have got a point.

“I look at their fixtures and I don’t think it’s possible for them to win the league now. The FA Cup is all they’ve got left – again.

“It’s not good enough. At the start of the season the FA Cup is the least important thing on their radar. But by this stage of the season it’s their main target.

“They got a nice draw against Watford so they should be alright. But who knows what he’ll do. Maybe he thinks they’re still in it against Barcelona in the Champions League and tries to rest players.

“He was wrong to show his frustration with the fans. They pay top dollar to watch Arsenal. You dread to think what will happen if he loses this game.

“The split with the fans might be irreparable then. If he thinks it’s bad now wait until that happens.”

I’ve no doubt that Merson’s comments are nothing more than a stab at Wenger. The man is a self-proclaimed Chelsea fan, not a Gooner, and he doesn’t give a monkey’s about the future of our club, nor where we finish. However, the point he made still stands. We are bored with finishing fourth, and as much as I enjoy winning the FA Cup, this shouldn’t be the highlight of our season.

As fans, we do need to start seeing signs that we’re on the up. This season was supposed to be ‘ours’ and it’s slipped away from us yet again. Wenger can be bored of being questioned all he likes but he can’t just sweep this season under the rug.
