Currently struggling with an ankle injury, Mesut Özil is hoping to be fit enough to play for Germany when they meet England on Saturday.

The two giants of European football go head-to-head in an international friendly in Berlin at the weekend and the Arsenal star is looking forward to facing club teammates Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott.

“Of course, I am excited about playing England because some of my teammates play for England,” said the 27-year-old. “It’s my second home.

“I’ve lived in England for three years now but the most important thing is we develop as a team and we are looking for some strong opponents to prove ourselves against.”

Germany are favourites for the European Championships this summer, and it’s hardly a surprise. After winning the World Cup in 2014, Jogi Löw’s side will look to underline their credentials as the best national team on the planet.

There’s no doubting what they hope the summer will hold.

“Our aim is to win the title, of course, and we will give everything to achieve this. If you look at the potential of the team we have many high-quality players who are capable of winning the title.”

Having been crowned World Champions already, this would complete Özil’s national collection. Germany have the squad to do it, but England will provide a stern test this weekend.
