After a long wait to represent his country again, Danny Welbeck will start for England in Berlin on Saturday evening.

A favourite of Roy Hodgson’s, the Arsenal man will be given the opportunity to prove his worth against the World Champions as he makes his first international appearance in 355 days.

After scoring six times in five Euro 2016 qualifying games, Welbeck’s knee injury kept him out of action for a year and he hasn’t played for the Three Lions since scoring against Lithuania 12 months ago. Now fit again, Welbeck’s performances for Arsenal have been incredibly impressive and he is being given the nod by Hodgson this weekend.

Welbeck has a strong international record with 14 goals in 44 England appearances and has been trusted by Hodgson to start at the last two major tournaments. There is plenty of competition for places, with Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge all vying for minutes and captain Wayne Rooney out injured. When the Manchester United striker returns, there will be even more competition.

Theo Walcott doesn’t start and may not even make the bench after missing training with a dead leg on Friday. There may be an opportunity for him to prove himself against the Netherlands in midweek but, for now, he will have to wait.
