One man who isn’t very popular at Arsenal is Stan Kroenke.

Unlike some owners at Premier League football clubs, the American is very hands off and allows the club to run as usual day-to-day without really getting involved, but is that a problem?

Arsenal fans are much more interested in having someone who cares deeply about the team in charge rather than a businessman who sees us as a good investment, and that just doesn’t seem to be Stan.

“You learn very quickly what that brand means,” Kroenke has said, but that doesn’t mean he cares about the club and what it stands for, rather he wants to maximise the value of that brand perception.

“We’re all working on that and that’s the big opportunity. Michael Jordan showed it – you can get paid a whole lot more if you can extend your brand.

“Manchester United showed it. They established benchmarks that people had thought heretofore unattainable, but their brand extension made people want to pay for it.”

But he wants us to win the league, right? Surely the best way to make the brand bigger is by winning, getting more fans, making more money to win more stuff?

“If you want to win championships then you would never get involved. I think the best owners in sports are the guys that sort of watch both sides a bit. If you don’t have a good business then you can’t really afford to go out and get the best players unless you just want to rely on other sources of income.”

Oh.

“Over there [in the Premier League] it was sort of like ‘well, we’ve got guys from the Middle East, the oil price is over $100, they can spend anything they want’.

“But the problem I saw with all of that; those people can lose interest. It doesn’t mean that they will, but I sort of threw that out there: ‘What happens when the Middle Eastern family, this thing’s costing a lot of money and they decide to go home?’ I said what really happens in those situations is the fans get hurt because the players get picked up and paid if they’re good, the front office gets other jobs.”

Lots of fans are already against Stan Kroenke, and these comments speak for themselves. He will get another £3m from the board next year, the fans and shareholders won’t be told why, unrest will continue to grow and he will continue to not really care or not even hear the complaints because he’s rarely at games or liasing with supporters.

What a sad state of affairs.
