England boss Roy Hodgson wanted Kieran Gibbs in tonight’s squad to face the Netherlands but couldn’t call the left-back up because he was on holiday.

After missing out on a place in the England squad to Danny Rose and Ryan Bertrand, Gibbs was given a few days off by Arsenal and decided to head to America for some rest.

Southampton regular Bertrand then picked up a knock and withdrew from the squad before the 3-2 win against Germany but, when Hodgson called, Gibbs was already away and it was too late.

According to the Mirror, the call came at the weekend – days after Bertrand had been ruled out. Clearly behind Bertrand and Rose in the pecking order, Gibbs is unlikely to go to this summer’s European Championships in France anyway. Leighton Baines is also considered with the Arsenal man but lacks match fitness, Luke Shaw is another player Hodgson prefers but won’t be back from a broken leg in time to feature this summer.

Arguably England’s fifth choice left-back, Gibbs isn’t likely to add to his 10 caps anytime soon.

The news meant Danny Rose had to play the full 90 minutes in Berlin on Saturday and will have to do the same again on Tuesday, with no alternative in the squad. It’s highly doubtful Mauricio Pochettino will be too pleased with that.

Out of favour with Arsenal, you wouldn’t expect Gibbs to make the Euro 2016 squad and certainly not now after having little choice but to pass up this opportunity.
