Danny Welbeck came back and breathed fire into our title challenge during an otherwise dismal February, and it was enough for the folks at Daily Cannon to name him our player of the month.

The forward made his long-awaited return against Leicester City, coming off the bench when Arsenal needed a goal to stay in the hunt for the title. After 10 months out of action, Danny delivered with a glancing header with more than 95 minutes on the clock. Cue one of the best celebrations in the short history of the Emirates Stadium.

A first start came against Hull City in the FA Cup, where Welbeck played wide and was one of our most dangerous players during a 0-0, threatening with his dynamic running and forcing one fantastic save.

Coming from the bench again versus Barcelona, the forward looked sharp and troubled Javier Mascherano and Dani Alves when he pulled out to the left flank. With a little more support when he got into dangerous areas in his limited time on the pitch, Welbeck may well have helped us snatch and equaliser before Lionel Messi scored his second from the penalty spot.

Then Old Trafford. A day to forget, but another goal from Welbeck against his former club. Not one to remember, but his performance was the best anyone offered in the 3-2 defeat and was more evidence that he’s over his knee injury. It’s fantastic to see him back and, given his performances during February, it feels like he’s one of our only hopes right now.

I don’t mean to brag, but when he was closing in on fitness I wrote about his return helping us (here) and now I feel a little smug. Welcome back and congratulations, Danny!
