Playing at home, you’d expect Spain u21s to have the measure of the majority of sides they come up against.

Boasting some of the finest youth talent in the world, a 3-0 defeat to Croatia u21s on Thursday night was a big shock. Arsenal’s Héctor Bellerín played the full 90 minutes in a strong side.

Despite using such a strong squad, Spain succumbed to Croatia in no small part thanks to a poor performance from Athletic Club goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Beaten twice by Stipe Perica and once by Duje Caleta-Car, Arrizabalaga didn’t cover himself in glory.

The game saw Croatia leapfrog the Spain side and go to the top of their Euro u21 qualifying group. The top side goes through to the tournament and the team in second goes into a play-off. Unfortunately for Spain, currently in second, Sweden are just three points behind and have two games in hand.

On a more personal level, Bellerín will be disappointed to miss out on the full Spain squad after an excellent season for Arsenal. The right-back is still waiting for his first call-up to the national team but it looks like he’ll have to wait until after the summer’s European Championships in France.
