According to Per Mertesacker, our loss against Swansea isn’t the end of the world.

I love Mertesacker, we all know this. But this post-match interview has irked me a bit.

I understand that the last thing the centre-back probably wanted to do after getting booed off the pitch was talk about the match and as captain he obviously stepped up. However, his comments sound a little condescending in the wake of a difficult result to take. The 2-1 loss to Swansea all but signaled the end of our title campaign. But apparently it’s not the end of the world…

“We tried really hard,” the German said.

“The effort was there tonight.

“We played quite well but always missed the last pass and hit the post a couple of times, but it’s not the end of the world.

“We wanted a better result than against Manchester United, but it was the small margins that cost us. We lost the game on one set piece and we needed to defend better.

“You could feel that we were nervous out there at the end of the game.

“We have to recover quickly before Saturday and that’s the only thing we are thinking of.”

At this point in time, it just feels as if we’re being fed recycled excuses and false promises. How many times have we been told the team were going to bounce back, only to see a similar performance to the one on Wednesday night?

It gets hard to feel positive about our remaining fixtures when we’re seeing no change in the way we play.
