It felt like the huge clash against Leicester City was going to fizzle out into a 1-1 draw.

The Gunners huffed and puffed for a winner against 10 men for the last 20 minutes of the match, but couldn’t force a breakthrough. Half-chances were missed, Kasper Schmeichel pulled off an incredible save to deny Olivier Giroud.

And then Marcin Wasilewski gave away a foul around 35 yards out, giving us one last chance to claim a winner. Mesut Özil stepped up to the ball and, according to boss, that’s the moment he believed we still had a chance.

A perfect cross produced Arsenal’s most important goal of the season so far. Mesut Özil’s 17th Premier League assist of the season, no wonder Wenger believed.

Two of those assists came in the win against Manchester City. Another, plus one of his four league goals so far this season, came against Mancheester United. The comment that he doesn’t deliver in big games can now, well and truly, be put to bed.

There is now bigger player at Arsenal than Özil, and there is no player more able to deliver when the pressure is on.
