During his press conference for Arsenal’s impending clash against Barcelona, Arsene Wenger had his say on the coin throwing seen at the Chelsea v Manchester City match on Sunday.

During Chelsea’s 5-1 win over City in the FA Cup on Sunday, both sets of players were pelted with coins from the crowd.

On the same day, a coin struck West Brom player, Chris Brunt, in the face, from someone thought to be one of the Baggies’ own supporters.

When asked about the incidents, Wenger stated that it was unacceptable and that the media is actually partly to blame.

“I feel that for years people in the stands feel they can get away with everything,” he said.

“The media played a little part in that. You are regularly insulted by people in the stands and without people having the feeling they could get punished. It will always go one step further and the incidents, for me, are a disgrace and unacceptable. Even if you pay your ticket, you can still respect people. I believe that is just not acceptable.”

Wenger knows more than most what it feels like to have disgusting abuse hurled at you from the stands without so much as a telling off. Our manager has had to undergo years upon years of vile chants and baseless accusations from opposition fans and he’s quite right that when they things go unpunished or are ignored, they often escalate.

How are players and managers supposed to enjoy their job if they’re under threat from flying objects the entire time?
