After a return to action and a last minute winner against Leicester City last Sunday, it’s fair to say Danny Welbeck has responded well to his injury hell.

The striker had missed 10 months before his comeback, but responded in style with a massive goal to win Arsenal a crucial game. Speaking to the media on Friday morning, Arsène Wenger hailed the character and the growth of the striker, who could start against Hull City in Saturday’s FA Cup tie.

“I believe it’s always a good observation of a character, the resilience of a person, when he’s injured for such a long time,” the boss replied when asked about Welbeck.

“You look at how he resists to that stress not to be capable of playing, how much can he respond with the effort he puts in in his rehab and how focused can he be every day when you go slowly step by step.”

“As well in Danny’s case he had a few setbacks, let’s not forget he was injured in April but we prepared him for the FA Cup final and he had a huge setback. I think he has become a stronger man with what happened to him.”

The goal on Sunday was a fantastic moment and you could tell how much it meant to Welbeck, who had been through so much over the course of the last year. So much hard work and effort goes into returning, but he’s finally back now.

For most the season is approaching the home straight, but for Danny Welbeck it’s only just beginning. Arsène Wenger also backed the striker to get even better.

“A lot better because he’s the right age for a player. He’s 25-year-old, he already has experience. Physically he’s back to his best so I believe the best is to come from him.”

Let’s hope so. A few more moments like the one he delivered last weekend would be just great.
