Given the nod to start ahead of Theo Walcott and Joel Campbell on Sunday, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain finally took his chance.

And I mean that quite literally, as the midfielder scored his first Premier League goal since September 2014 to double Arsenal’s lead at Dean Court. It was a lovely finish and one that the England international’s general play deserved.

Amazingly, it was also his first away goal for Arsenal. Boss Arsène Wenger was delighted for the Ox.

“I’m happy for him because he works hard, he’s focused to work hard,” said Wenger.

Oxalde-Chamberlain has struggled for playing time lately, falling down the pecking order thanks to the form of Joel Campbell, but Sunday’s performance will put him firmly at the front of his manager’s mind once again.

“In every game I have a selection problem because I have many good players, especially in the wide positions but it’s down to performances and my selections. He has an excellent mentality, he’s very focused, he has learnt his job and he has matured a lot so I’m happy for him.

“I felt he was a bit tired in the second half and could not sustain the level he had in the first half completely, but with his power and technique I expect him to score goals.”

On Sunday he did just that, helping Arsenal to all three points. He must now be in contention for a start against Leicester City next weekend and, should he perform once again, he’ll soon become impossible to ignore.

Hopefully we see a run of form now, as it’s something Ox has needed all season long.
