Arsene Wenger echoed the sentiment of many Arsenal fans after our 0-0 draw against Southampton on Tuesday that as good as Fraser Forester was, our attempts on goal weren’t exactly challenging.

Despite having both the lion’s share of possession and shots on target, the majority of our attempts were either directly at the Southampton keeper or so weak that they required very little effort to save. Of course, the 27-year-old was under pressure for the entire game and to keep a clean sheet at the end was admirable, but the stats don’t really show the full story.

“You expect their keeper to have a good game but I believe as well we had very poor finishing,” Wenger said.

“It’s difficult to find a player in our team basically who had no chances today.

“We came out with a 0-0, with the experience we have in our team, that’s disappointing. It’s frustrating because we put a lot of energy into a game like that. We created a lot of chances of top quality and couldn’t finish.”

Although the stats make it seems as if we were pummeling the goal with shot after shot for the entire second half while Forster defied the laws of physics to keep our bombardment at bay, it wasn’t quite like that. We tried but most attempts left the Arsenal fans feeling frustrated because they were being wasted.

Considering the level of quality we’ve got in our squad, it’s disappointing that we couldn’t even put one goal away.
